History of Evening Primrose
Evening Primrose (Oenothera Biennis) is a
wild plant native to eastern Canada and Northeastern USA. For centuries
North American natives used the plant for both nutritional and medicinal
purposes. During the 18th century, European royalty treated
the plant as a miraculous herbal medicine for a large variety of
ailments.
For the passed 20 years, Evening Primrose
Oil has been widely accepted as a dependable health product affecting
the following conditions:
- Cholestrol Levels & Platelet
Aggregation
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Alcoholism
- Premenstrual Syndrome
- Obesity
- Hair & Nair Problems
Main Ingredient of Evening Primrose
Oil
Evening Primrose Oil is a light yellow
vegetable oil, extracted from Evening Primrose seeds. It takes 5,000
seeds to extract 500 mg of oil with 86% of the fatty acids being
polyunsaturated.
Linoleic Acid (LA) is the major essential
fatty acid and the rare cis Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) comprises
the majority of the balance. The compound called prostagiandins E1 is
also present which controls cell growth, cell regeneration, skin
condition, the menstrual cycle and blood pressure.
Evening Primrose Oil is an essential oil
because it supplies, firstly the biologically active EFA for normal
metabolism and secondly, it provides GLA as a dietary source.
Cholesterol & Platelet
Aggregation
Gammalinolenic acid in the Evening
Primose Oil effectively lowers serum cholesterol in twelve or more weeks
in persons with high Cholesterol levels.
Evening Primrose Oil also decreases the
tendency of the blood to clot. Clotting can lead to circulation problems
and can cause trombosis. A clot in a coronary artery can cause coronary
thrombosis and a clot in the brain can cause a stroke.
Multiple Sclerosis
Multiple sclerosis is a disease of the
nervous system where small areas of the brain and spinal cord degenerate
and nerve fibers lose their insulating myelin sheaths and their ability
to conduct nerve impulses. The nerve tissues, plasma and red blood cells
of multiple sclerosis patients have all been found to be low in
gammalinolenic acid. Evening Primose Oil rich in gammalinolic acid has
proven to be of value in helping Multiple Sclerosis sufferers. It has
also been suggested that diets low in saturated fats and rich in
unsaturated fats may also help sufferers.
Alcoholism
Preliminary tests have demonstrated that
Evening Primrose Oil makes withdrawal from alcohol easier, effectively
relieving post-drinking depression. The oil also speeds up the cell
regeneration in the brain and the liver.
Premenstrual Syndrome
The Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS) is a
common condition in women. Symptoms of PMS are weight gain, bloating,
breast pain, irritability, and a variety of other conditions. Women with
severe PMS have consistently reported relief of both the physical and
mental complaints when taking Evening Primose Oil. Breast pain is
strikingly relieved with Evening Primose Oil.
In 1981, a study done on women using
Evening Primose Oil at St. Thomas Hospital in London showed the
following response. 61% of the patients reported complete relief of PMS,
25% reported partial relief. The results were attributed to the ability
of PgE1 to inhibit the effects of prolactin, an agent thought
responsible for some of the symptoms of PMS.
In another study, Evening Primose
Oil(Gamma Oil) was used with remarkable success. The symptoms of swollen
abdomen and breast discomfort were eradicated in 95% of the women,
irritability in 80%, depression in 74%, swollen fingers and ankles in
79%, and anxiety in 53%. Dr. Michael Brush, the biochemist who conducted
the study, recommended a dosage of four 500mg capsules morning and night
for two weeks leading up to the menstruation.
Obesity
A study of 38 individuals taking EPO
showed that among the 22 who were within 10% of their ideal weight, none
lost any weight. Patients over the 10% limit exhibited an average lose
of 9 pounds.
Another study that took place in the
University Hospital of Wales stated that people who are most likely to
lose weight on evening primose oil are those with low
sodium-potassium-ATPase activity.
This and other studies have suggested
that the amount of weight loss related to the amount of oil taken. A
dose of 8 x 500mg capsules per day is recommended.
Hair & Nail Problems
Evening Primrose Oil contains high levels
of GLA, which counters the lack of EFA which causes hair loss and weak
nails. Numerous investigators have now consistently reported that when
using Primose Evening Oil, brittle nails harden and become normal within
3 to 4 weeks. The response is so consistent that it seems that brittle
nails and hair loss are a new symptom of ELA deficiency.
When Making a Purchase
Following are a few factors to consider
when purchasing Evening Primrose Oil.
The best extraction method of the oil
is non-solvent cold pressed method.
Special attention should be given to
the GLA (%) levels, at least 7%, preferably 9%.
Raw Evening Primrose Oil is highly
unsaturated (92%) and is a perishable oil. Natural antioxidants like
Vitamin E greatly preserve and stabilize the oil in it’s
biologically active cis conformation. With natural sources of Vitamin
E added to the oil, it helps preserve the oil for long shelf life. NO
other refining, additives or preservatives should be used.
